See, for example http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/408/1985/7/0/2154410/ where Karen Kolling reported in 1985 how Unipress was obstructing people from using GNU Emacs freely, citing their copyright claims on parts of the code written by James Gosling. The papers that you sign are designed to prevent these sorts of difficulties from happening in the future.
