Is vc-dir with PCL-CVS a fair comparison? The latter only works with CVS
while the former works with many version control systems.

I think that it's more accurate to say that vc-dir replaces vc-directory.
In which case Glenn's patch doesn't change the default behavior but fixes
broken behavior.
