The applications, AFAIK, create a "graphic context" and then they draw on
it both shapes and character gliphs.
In the example I posted the gs program (from the ghostgum suite - I
fear it could be non-free) was told to use that system.
With some saner printer design you can send data directly to the
printer (on the LPT port or to the network address/port) bypassing the
driver, but dumber "I need the windows driver" printers do exist (HP
do you hear me :) ?)
