Hello,

I just installed emacs for windows version. (emacs-21.3)

Weird thing is that I could type utf-8, but couldn't write it to utf-8
format. When I write it by C-x C-s, I got following messages:

----------
These default coding systems were tried:
  mule-utf-8
However, none of them safely encodes the target text.

Select one of the following safe coding systems:
  euc-kr iso-2022-kr iso-2022-jp-2 x-ctext iso-2022-7bit raw-text
  emacs-mule no-conversion iso-2022-7bit-lock-ss2

------------

I couldn't find utf-8 in "safe coding systems."

How can I enable utf-8 in the safe coding systems?

Thank you,

Daniel.

FWIW, I also got that message once.

What text did you type? Can you post it here (as binary attachment,
to avoid mutilation by email software)? Maybe copy/paste via the
Windows clipboard into some email program and send.

Also, please tell how did you "type utf-8", exactly. I'm guessing you
actually mean Unicode, not utf-8 (the latter is just an encoding), but
anyway, please tell the details.

What input method was that?

If you go to these Korean characters in the buffer which you tried to
save, and type "C-u C-x =", what does Emacs display in the buffer it
pops up?

Finally, what happens if you type "C-x RET c utf-8 RET C-x C-s"?

Input Method: korean-hangul3

When I follow yours of "C-x RET c utf-8 RET C-x C-s", emacs didn't
complain like the description above. However, actual written document
does not seem to be UTF-8. When I reload the file using emacs or other
editor supporting utf-8, it contains only broken characters just like
showing square boxes.

Oh, Also, when I type "C-u C-x =", it is saying "point=5 of 4 (100%)
column 0" in the minibuffer window. Nothing of like pop up window
shows up.

There is information in detail in the first post. Thank you,

Then "C-u C-x =" should show a buffer named *Help* with detailed
information about the character at cursor. Please tell what that
buffer shows.

As I said, the minibuffer's saying which is "point=5 of 4 (100%)
> column 0" is all. No other information came out. I downloaded the emacs from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/windows/ , and chose emacs-21.3-fullbin-i386.tar.gz . Yes, the emacs is running on Windows XP. Is it different depending on OS?

Oh, finally, I could figure out what you meant about C-u C-x =. Sorry.

It is saying that:
--------------------
  character: ^[$-3õ½ (01175275, 326333, 0x4fabd)
charset: mule-unicode-e000-ffff (Unicode characters of the range U
+E000..U+FFFF.)
 code point: 117 61
     syntax: word
   category:
buffer code: 0x9C 0xF3 0xF5 0xBD
file code: 0xEF 0xBF 0xBD (encoded by coding system mule-utf-8-unix)
       font: -Adobe-Courier-Medium-R-Normal--17-120-100-100-M-100-
ISO10646-1
---------------------

I changed OS from Windows XP to Ubuntu 6.10 and installed emacs using
apt-get. Thanks
