I tracked down the issue(s), however. The difference in pathnames has always been painful to me. Thus, the first problem turned out to be that CYGWINHOME had been set to *nix style (/cygwin/c/local/applics/cygwin), and was expected to be set Windoze style (c:/local/applics/cygwin). Secondly, and the true nature of the failure apparently turned out to be an issue with the paths (not) present or, again, miscoded in EMACSLOADPATH. Emacs wasn't able to find 'comint.el' and/or 'shell.el'. When I tracked them down and added them to my emacs directory, is when Cygwin's bash began to work (at least). Thanx much, odoncaoa
