I have noticed that when init.el is a symlink to a true init file, say init.el -> init.el-A, visiting it loads correctly the file but in Fundamental mode, not Emacs-Lisp-mode.
Is this to be expected? I wonder if you can save goat and cabbage ...
Ciao,
Angelo.

Just as a trick, a symlink as this works as expected:
init.el -> init-A.el
(i.e. having a true file ending in .el)
