The emacs commit 6ddcf67052545a0f77233f1a952dc90e296cda35 seems to be
the problem. The issue is *not* with org-mode.

This should now be fixed in Emacs 29.

I am attempting to confirm the fix but ...
After git pull, my emacs still is at 29.0
I don't see a special branch for 29.1
... And the org-mode build still fails with the error.
Is the fix actually pushed to main?
How can I obtain the code so I can verify the fix?

Treat smtp-auth method from auth-info as a symbol
The lookup of the SMTP auth method is done based on symbols, but
sometimes the requested value comes from `auth-info', in which case it
is a string, so call `intern-soft' to convert it to a symbol (which
does nothing if it's already a symbol).
