This is very close to what I was looking for. Thanks, Pascal.

My modified macro is below. Why ',name is expanded as ... (as shown by
`macroexpand-all'?

(defvar old-defun 'defun)           ; the symbol!
(unintern 'defun)

(defmacro defun (name args &rest body)
    `(progn
