You have long lost me on your discussion about Emacs internals, but I should just like to say that the unicode-fonts package from https://github.com/rolandwalker/unicode-fonts has fixed all these delays for me.

As far as I understand, this package maps Unicode blocks to specific fonts.  I presume that Emacs would otherwise search through all installed fonts for one that supports the Unicode character that needs to be drawn, and that the explicit mapping prevents Emacs from doing that.

Seems that Eli was right with his “Fix your font configuration” remark.
