My emacs by default highlights my comments as a magenta color.  what is the 
best way to have it highlight my comments in a light gray color so that 
they don't stand out quite so much?

Do `M-x customize-face font-lock-comment-face RET', change the
colour and click on "Save for future session".

You can get a list of the different faces with `M-x list-faces-display'.
