PS since my mac and OS is few years old, both Carbon Emacs and Aquamacs Emacs has dropped support for about over a year, so i haven't tested their latest. Is current version Carbon Emacs or Aquamacs actually run on cocoa code base from emacs 23? could anyone download this file http://xahlee.org/emacs/unicode.txt and show screenshot in their current Carbon/Aquamacs Emacs? I built emacs 23.1 "hackers-only" version successfully (on my MacOSX 10.5.8). Viewing your unicode.txt, I can see a little difference. Some Math symbols can not be shown in my Cocoa build (I trust it's owing to my font setting). While all of them show correctly in Carbon+AppKit build. I suggest you build this port. It's not hard. Just get official release tarball, and apply patch-mac patch file, then copy additional files into the tree. There is an installation instruction included. Dear Xah, X11 supports UTF-8 stuff very well, i think. Currently, Emacs also good to UTF-8. However, i don't know about MacOS. Please Let me pay my small adivce and respect for you. Yes, you need to switch from MacOS to free operating system (e.g., GNU/Linux or BSD). In particular, if you did have some customization, did you simpy pull the Options, Set Default Font, or is it more complicated, such as creating a emacs concept of fontset, or download some font on the net, etc? > However, i don't know about MacOS. Of course, its screenshot was from Emacs 23 on FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE. See bottom of the screenshot with care. And i put some values into ~/.emacs for that, as flollow: ;; Font, Charset (set-default-font "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-12") (set-fontset-font "fontset-default" '(#x1100 . #xffdc) '("UnTaza" . "unicode-bmp")) (setq default-frame-alist '((font . "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-12"))) (set-language-environment "UTF-8") (set-coding-priority '(coding-category-utf-8)) (setq locale-coding-system 'utf-8) (set-selection-coding-system 'utf-8) (prefer-coding-system 'utf-8) (setq-default mime-transfer-level 8) That was all to make the screenshot. >> However, i don't know about MacOS. Thanks. That's GNU emacs right? not Carbon Emacs or Aquamacs Emacs. Am wondering, does emacs actually uses font substitution? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Font_substitution or, is font substitution part of the font api and emacs simply use the OS api?
