Come to think of it, I've been wondering *why* this is so.  Over a
slow but still reasonable connection, things that should not affect
screen updating at all also take 4 -- 10 times as long under X as
with -nw.  For example, I timed the loading of my .emacs, and what
usually takes 4-5 seconds takes 30 seconds under X when running over
the slow line.  Hardly any screen updating takes place during this
process.  

Can anyone explain this?  Is it only me??
