Just a shot in the dark...
There's an inconsistency here: In `gnus-select-method' you specify
nnmaildir as the native select method while `nnmail-expiry-target'
specifies a secondary select method.
In the Group buffer, you can jump to native groups e.g. using `j
some.group RET', while for secondary groups, you need to use `j
nnmaildir+Mail:some.group'.
