I'm starting to think my install of Gnu Emacs 21.3.1 for Windows is
cursed.
M-x desktop save is rejected as [no match]. What gives?!

P.S. I do have desktop-load-default and desktop-read ... but no
desktop-save and no desktop-save-mode. ?!?

Does it help to say "M-x load-library RET desktop RET", and then try
again?

Got this working - not with desktop-save, which I still can't get, but
with (desktop-load-default) and (desktop-read) in my init file. I don't
know why I don't have desktop-save, but it doesn't seem to matter.
