Does emacs provide a concept for executing applications and
redirecting their output into a buffer? Is there a keystroke bound
upon files having the x-bit (UNIX) or a .exe-file-extension (Windoze)?

Yes and no. The output also goes to the *Shell Command Output* buffer
which is not displayed if the output fits into the minibuffer. Try
running a program which produces really long output.
