I run Emacs 22.3.1 under Windows XP.
I have been trying to put something in my .emacs file that will cause
eshell & calc to be loaded. Do those whole directories /lisp have be
loaded file by file? The eponymous files within those directories do
not do the job. I keep being told that some other .el file or other
can't be loaded. apropos -> load does not reveal anything
suggestive. What am I missing?

M-x eshell RET should DTRT for eshell.
M-x calc RET should DTRT for calc.
Is that what you want? If not, please give more details about what
you are looking for.

I take it DTRT stands for "do the right thing"?
It doesn't. It gets the message "Cannot open load file: eshell" in
the minibuffer.

That brings up a couple of windows & then says "Selecting deleted
buffer".

I would like to load all the files in those directories so that
(presumably) the commands will work in my Emacs. I am obviously
missing something obvious.

You don't load whole directories, but you might need to add directories
to the variable load-path. That's normally done for you.
Have you altered load-path?

Thank you! That did the job. I used to know about load-path, but
forgot about it over the years. None of us is getting any younger.
