I never saw my follow up with more info, so here is my complete post
again, with extra info, hoping someone can help:

I have a LaTeX document, single-file, ~4700 lines. 3 chapters, each
with about 25 sections. When I try to pull up a TOC for this using
RefTeX, I get an error: stack overflow in regexp matcher.

I am running: Emacs 21.2.1 on win2k, reftex 4.19f (auctex 11.11). I
can give the debug contents if needed, privately, or you can tell me
what is relevant (it includes text from the document I don't want to
post...) and I can post it here.

Same problem occurs whether the document is in one piece, or-- as I
normally have it-- each chapter is an included file.
