I am using completion in emacs and get the following
M-x marshall-{centcom | vlog}
I know how to use C-, and C-. to make the selection. But them how does one
execute the selection.

Looks like fido-mode.
I am in that case rather typing then moving from one to other, I would
type cent, it would match, I would press ENTER or C-j

I'm a little overwhelmed with the choice in auto completion options for
emacs in buffers. What do you use and why?
Is hippy-expand the way? What about the predictive package's or the
completion-ui package here?
http://www.dr-qubit.org/emacs.php
Any advice appreciated.

Most of the time I just use dabbrev, because its simple, predictable and
most of all included. :)
hippie-expand should be just as well, it just does a little much at once
for my taste. As I said, I prefer predictability.
Everything else depends greatly on what type of buffer you're editing.
Many modes have their own completion mechanisms that are usually good at
what they do (nxml does pure magic given schemas ...).
If you do text completion, Predictive Mode and Magpie seem popular.
If you program, don't forget the power of abbrevs and templates

As the name says, that's a front-end designed to deal with the mess
created by the mentioned mechanisms. (Each one has its own
look-and-feel and configuration, which is silly).
But right now, you'll probably have to write your own backends ...

Nikolaj Schumacher
