When was your Emacs built? I guess it's somewhat old, because this
was recently fixed.

If it is a recent build, describe how you get that error.

When I turn off font-lock-mode and invoke facemenu-set-bold, it just
works

I don't think that was unfixed, maybe you need to turn off
font-lock-mode?

Oh, no...      ಠ_ಠ

Not like that...

Well let me say that most probably the function (facemenu-set-bold) in
your init file worked correctly, you just have not seen it. This may
be because it was executed in a buffer where you did not participate.

So first is to ask Emacs what it means by using:

             {C-h f facemenu-set-bold RET}

Where it will say:

facemenu-set-bold is an interactive compiled Lisp function.

It is bound to <menu-bar> <edit> <Text Properties> <fc> b.

(facemenu-set-bold)

Select face ‘bold’ for subsequent insertion.
If the mark is active and there is no prefix argument,
apply face ‘bold’ to the region instead.
This command was defined by ‘facemenu-add-new-face’.

So if it is "interactive" it means it is not supposed to be invoked
from init.el file but if you insist, you are free to do so.

It is meant for "subsequent insertion".

How about you explain what you really wish to achieve? Do you want all
fonts to be bold? In that case why not use

                   {M-x customize-face RET default RET}

and then set it bolder or how you wish it to be.

I like to use bold fonts. But want to set things up in my init file.

It's not the Emacs version, it's your code: it assumes facemenu is
preloaded, and that changed lately. So you need to (require 'facemenu).

Has been suggested to me that I use

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :weight 'ultra-bold)

What do you think Eli?

You have not stated your goal and expectation in this thread, so your
question cannot be meaningfully answered.

In the other thread, you said your goal is to have everything
displayed in bold and your previous approach was to use
(facemenu-set-bold), so a better approach was suggested to you.

Originally I was using (facemenu-set-bold) but things have changed lately.
Thusly Eli instructed on calling (require 'facemenu).

The following was suggested to me, and I am using it. Bet do not know if there is
consensus that the latter is a better approach. Just checking out.

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :weight 'ultra-bold)

I'm not sure I understand well enough what you want to do. I suggest
to try that; if it works, fine.

Had used facemenu-set-bold because I wanted all text to show in bold.

So it is either

(require 'facemenu)
(facemenu-set-bold)

or

(set-face-attribute 'default nil :weight 'ultra-bold)

How did it even work for you?

    $ ls -l /tmp/test-bold/
     .   ..   .emacs

    $ cat /tmp/test-bold/.emacs
    (facemenu-set-bold)

    $ HOME=/tmp/test-bold emacs

Observed behavior: Emacs starts up with *GNU Emacs* buffer. None of
its contents is bold.

    $ HOME=/tmp/test-bold emacs newfile

Observed behavior: Emacs starts up with an empty buffer. Text typed in
this buffer is displayed in bold. However, if I switch to *scratch*,
its contents are not bold. If I ‘C-x C-f’ a file, its text is not
bold.

    $ HOME=/tmp/test-bold emacs .emacs

Observed behavior: Emacs starts up with a buffer containing the text
‘(facemenu-set-bold)’. It is not bold. Entering any new text does not
make it bold.

Bottom line: your former approach does not work except in a single and
rare case.

Define "all text".

Text of the files I read and modify in emacs. But I would not mind for emacs to use
bold text in other places.
