I'm trying to build GNU Emacs 21.3 on my DECsystem 5000/240 pmax machine,
which runs NetBSD 1.6.1. I've tried building it from both pkgsrc and direct
from source, and run into this error:

Does anyone know what might cause this error? This is from pkgsrc, and I've
tried pulling a new pkgsrc from CVS, but it gives the same error.

I've never seen this. Can you go to the directory containing temacs
(probably src) and invoke the following command?
LC_ALL=C ./temacs -batch --eval '(setq debug-on-error t)' -l loadup dump
What happens?

Sorry it took so long to get back; it's been a busy week so far. Anyways,
here's the output:
% LC_ALL=C ./temacs -batch --eval '(setq debug-on-error t)' -l loadup dump
zsh: exec format error: ./temacs
I'm not sure if this is useful but here's the output of running file on
temacs:
% file temacs 0:08
temacs: ELF 32-bit LSB MIPS-I executable, MIPS, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped
I also ran file on /bin/ls, which gave back this:
% file /bin/ls 0:09
/bin/ls: ELF 32-bit LSB MIPS-I executable, MIPS, version 1 (SYSV), for NetBSD, statically linked, stripped
Is the lack of "for NetBSD" significant? Perhaps the compiler isn't
compiling for the right operating system?

I think so.

That's what I think, too. Is your compiler a cross-compiler? Maybe
you have more than one compiler on your system, and Emacs is picking
the wrong one.

I have gcc 2.95.3 from the base system. I also built gcc 3.3 from pkgsrc,
which is installed in /usr/pkg/gcc-3.3. I would think both of them should
fine, though.

Well, I would have a look at the command line used to invoke the
compiler (when building Emacs), then I'd see whether that command line
can compile hello.c. And whether the resulting executable works.
If that wasn't it, then I'm at the end of my rope.
