After leaving VAX/VMS/LSE I encounterd emacs, when I started working in a large, nearly collapsing software project. It didn't fail in the end, which had a lot to do with the use of free software like emacs, gcc, gdb, cygwin. Since then I've been using some other environments including Borland and Microsoft IDEs as well as Eclipse on Unix Windows and GNU/Linux systems but nothing stopped me using the most flexible editor emacs.
