It turns out that the code I have just wrote works fine when called
interactively
M-x global-whitespace-formfeed-mode
but if I write this in ~/.emacs
(global-whitespace-newline-mode 1)
enables the whole of whitespace-mode, with spaces and newlines
highlighted, not just formfeed.
