tramp: 2.95
I have been trying to get tramp working and have not been able to get it
to replace the ange-ftp functionality. I have read the FAQ and made sure
that ange-ftp is not butchering the file-name-handler-alist. This is my
current value:
file-name-handler-alist's value is
(("\\.Z\\(~\\|\\.~[0-9]+~\\)?\\'\\|\\.bz2\\'\\|\\.tgz\\'\\|\\.g?z\\(~\\|\\.~[0-9]+~\\)?\\'" . jka-compr-handler)
("\\`/\\[.*\\]" . tramp-file-name-handler)
("^/[^/:]*\\'" . ange-ftp-completion-hook-function)
("^/[^/:]*[^/:.]:" . ange-ftp-hook-function)
("\\`/:" . file-name-non-special))
Unfortunately, I do not have a working example to know if this is correct
or not. The regexp for tramp-file-name-handler seems wrong to me, but I do
not want to just randomly change it. If I were to take a wild stab at it,
I would think it should look just like the ange-ftp regexp.
So, would someone who has tramp working please post their
file-name-handler-alist. Also, if anything else wrong pops out at anyone,
please post it so that I can get this fixed.
Thank you in advance.

Looks like a very old version. I changed the version numbering
recently, the current version is 2.0.38.
Does that work better?

What helped the most was reading the manual and discovering that
/[username@my.networked.machine]some/directory works. I kept trying the
old way of /username@my.networked.machine:some/directory which invokes
ange-ftp. Now that I look at the regexp in file-name-handler-alist, I see
that is correct. Oh, and I have upgraded. Thanks.
