Dear all,
I'm using the latest XFT_JHD_BRANCH of emacs but have some problems
with the font. I post the question here in case someone might have a
fix for it. I thank you in advance.

The problem is: starting emacs with "-fn 'mono-10'" command line option
and by (set-frame-font "mono-10") in ~/.emacs have different effects
with the former being prettier. Have a look at the following
screenshots:

http://people.pwf.cam.ac.uk/sl392/emacs/emacs-xft-ugly.png

Any idea why the latter does not produce the same appearance? Any
recommendation for setting a nice anti-aliased font?

Just some information from 'descibe-fontset':

start emacs -fn 'mono-10':
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fontset: -*-*-regular-r-*-*-13-*-*-*-*-0-fontset-startup
CHARSET or CHAR RANGE	FONT NAME
---------------------	---------
ascii	-bitstream-bitstream vera sans mono-regular-r-*-*-13-*-*-*-*-0-*-*
     [-bitstream-bitstream vera sans mono-regular-r-*-*-13-*-*-118-*-0-*-*]
...
------------------------------------------------------------------------

start emacs with (set-default-font "mono-10"):
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fontset: -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-default
CHARSET or CHAR RANGE	FONT NAME
---------------------	---------
ascii -adobe-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
     [-bitstream-bitstream vera sans-regular-r-*-*-17-*-*-118-*-0-*-*]
...
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically, I need a setting in ~/.emacs that I have the same affect of
'emacs -fn 'mono-10''

Thanks.
