I think this will work: Say, you need three images, use a 3-char before string and put an display/image property on each of those chars. -- Kim F. Note that if the 3 images are the same, you have that the value of the `display' property is not `eq'ual for all 3 chars, otherwise Emacs will think it's a single image that covers 3 chars.
