I thought I saw a snippet of elisp that did just that somewhere. But
now I am at a loss to find it. If I'm just hallucinating, does
anyone know how to tie the guns "compose-mail" command to `C-x m'?

(setq mail-user-agent 'gnus-user-agent)
[I don't remember if this is new in Gnus 5.10, though]

I think this is a feature of Emacs, not Gnus, so it is the version of
Emacs that will be relevant, not Gnus. I'm pretty sure it was
introduced in 21.1, or maybe even 20.4.
(setq read-mail-command 'gnus)
does the other half of the job.
