Just the calender issue seems to not > want to :-( Hmm, I don't think a vanilla Gnu Emacs built from the sources loads '~/emacs/init.el'. I don't know what the Debian folks might have done -- but try to put it in '~/.emacs' instead (not '~/emacs/.emacs' but '.emacs' directly in your home dir).
