Hi,
Sorry about the cross-posting, I've been trying to find a solution for
this for at least 3 weeks now. Many attempts have ended in vain.
Please somebody help, please.
I've been using the following to set up my Emacs colors (dig up from
google) up till emacs-21.2-33, but they no longer work under
emacs-21.3+1-5.
- - - - >8 - - - -
Emacs.default.attributeBackground: gray25
Emacs.default.attributeForeground: gray85
Emacs*XlwMenu.background: gray35
Emacs*XlwMenu.topShadowColor: gray60
Emacs*XlwMenu.bottomShadowColor: gray10
Emacs*XlwMenu.foreground: gray80
- - - - >8 - - - -
I've even made the above changes in
/usr/share/apps/kdisplay/app-defaults/Emacs.ad
and starts with emacs -q --no-site-file.
But still, emacs give me a black on white theme, which makes my eyes pain
for over 3 weeks now. Can anybody help?
Specifically, how can I set the editing area and menu's
foreground/background?
THANKS A THOUSAND.

For the main area I use simply Emacs.foreground and Emacs.background.
Sorry I can't help with the menus (I am happy with the default
black on gray).

This could be the wrong file (and/or directory). I think the file
should be named Emacs, not Emacs.ad. And the directory needs to be
mentioned in XUSERFILESEARCHPATH or XFILESEARCHPATH or some
environment variable like this.
Perhaps it works to put it in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults?
You can use "appres Emacs" to check if you have used the right
filename/directory. Perhaps "strace -eopen appres Emacs" is
illucidating regarding the search path.

I just noticed that kdisplay dir - are you running kde? While I've
never used it, I have seen posts which indicate kde will over-ride
Xresource/Xdefault settings unless a tick box is set in its
configuration file. Without the tick, colours are over-riden by the
KDE desktop settings.

I'm sort of a new kde user but I haven't found the above to be true.
I haven't checked anything special but my colors listed in .Xresources
are the ones I see when starting such things as emacs and xterm.

You may be able to put settings like the following in ~/.Xresources
(Note: bangs (!) are considered comment chars in ~/.Xresources
You didn't mention what operating system you use but there was a time
when settings like these went in ~/.Xdefaults but in recent fedora
(redhat) desktops, this file name was changed to ~/.Xresources
These all take effect when I startx using recent Fedora core 2 and kde
desktop. But I think it works for gnome too.

Hi,
man emacs
which talks about the settings in ~/.Xresources
add the entries, make sure they get loaded:
xrdb -load ~/.Xresources
double-check!
xrdb -query
hope this helps

Ha .. there's something I had forgotten all about... thanks
Does anyone know where there is a handy dandy reference chart that
shows equivalent meaning of color notations like these in plain english?
nedit*statsLine.background: #e6e6e6
nedit*statsLine.foreground: #000000
nedit*text.background: #ffffff
nedit*text.cursorForeground: #000000
nedit*text.foreground: #000000
nedit*text.selectBackground: #4c59a6
nedit*text.selectForeground: #ffffff

Do you mean lookup the color name based on the RGB value?
In general this is ill-defined because there are only about 1000 colors
defined in rgb.txt but there are 256^6 possible RGB combinations, assuming
16 bit depth.
What you can do is program a best approximation in some sense, for example,
least-square approximation. The classic program for that is xcolorsel;
I have recently written a gtk 2.x act-alike called gcolorsel:
http://primate.net/~itz/gcolorsel_1.9.1.orig.tar.gz
(the .orig. is because it is part of a Debian source package, together with
the .dsc and .diff.gz files at the same location)
