I think all groups must be matched successfully or accessing them will
throw an error.  That isn't the case if the ? operator wasn't successful.

So instead of

"\\(  (\\|)  \\)?"

do:

"\\(  \\(:? (\\|) \\)? \\)"

(spaces added for readability)
