I am running emacs 21.2 on Mac OS X. I just installed w3. I want
to change the default homepage without using custom. How do I do this?

You could set `w3-default-homepage' variable in the profile of w3,
i.e. ~/.w3/profile .
Have a look at the "Getting Started" section of the w3 manual.
