The 'fault' would be a fork in emacs. What's the perceived need? The executable isn't big by today's standards. If you don't use a feature like email, browser, or debugger, it doesn't get in the way. I use emacs for commits. It pops up a frame, I add some comments and exit. I can't imagine how it could be simpler.
