This customization I also use.
In Debian 4.0 I get about 5 sec delay on emacs start up
(on Windows - ok), but feature very useful.
There is exist way edit .Xdefault if you on UNIX
(analogue as set up env var), man can help how it do.

Another related question: how to fit emacs windows to all screen size?
