Even better, perhaps:

(add-hook 'find-file-hook
	  (lambda ()
	    (when (string-match "\\.cpp\\'" buffer-file-name)
	      (set (make-local-variable 'compile-command)
		   (format "g++ %s"
			   (file-name-nondirectory buffer-file-name))))))
