Emacs failed in reading file from ftp

Hello,

I got a (big) problem:

My emacs (GNU Emacs 21.4.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll 
bars) of 2007-06-19 on ninsei, modified by Debian), running on debian 
etch has a problem while reading files from an ftp server (pureFTP). 
This is an error that occurs not everytime, but today I have a file of 
7,5 MByte, but the emacs Editor reads only a "few" bytes, sometimes 
128K sometime 260K without any schematic. This error occurs sometimes 
without warning: I read an php-file from the the server, store it, run 
it, and an error occurs: the file is broken, not all was loaded (a part 
of the end was missing), I haven't noticed it, change something, store 
and: I loose my file (but I can recovered from the incrementell backups).

The in the *Messages* buffer shows the error:

Where www-data is the file of 7,5 MByte data.

The ftp-server shows following in the logs:
Jan 16 18:09:35 localhost pure-ftpd: (wwwtest@127.0.0.1) [NOTICE] 
//home/wwwtest/public_html/class_readmail/www-data downloaded  (7568015 
bytes, 285175.62KB/sec)
Jan 16 18:09:44 localhost pure-ftpd: (wwwtest@127.0.0.1) [NOTICE]

bytes, 249759.01KB/sec)

and so on. More than 20 downloads, all occurs into the log with the 
same filesize and without any warning... So I think: It's emacs...

Sometime: I couldn't read any file from ftp-server. After 3-6 retries, 
it works...

Who knows this problem, what is the reason and where should I search?

Could you, please show the buffer *ftp hostname* in case the error happens?

I didn't know, that there is a buffer for the ftp... :-)

I think, I know where you will find the problem: Do you mean that could 
be a coding problem? I just take a look for "quote mdtm", and the type 
is ASCII... there could be a coherency... but I don't know, where the 
solution could be? FTP-Server (pure-ftp) or emacs?

"mdtm" is no problem; it returns just the modification time of a
file. And it did it correctly with "20080116200717".

Looks like you haven't shown the whole buffer. Could you do this, please?

of course. Heres is a fresh one with the big mail-file (7,5 MByte). 
This is a nice example, cause, the buffer isn't correct loaded.

Hmm, there is nothing suspicious in the log. Everything looks like it
should.

Could you, please, try the same ftp commands from a shell? That means,
connec to wwwtest@localhost, and apply the following ftp commands in
the same order:

hash
pwd
ls "-al /." /tmp/ange-ftp20665UjO
quote mdtm /
ls "-al /public_html/." /tmp/ange-ftp20665WlK
quote mdtm /public_html/
ls "-al /public_html/class_readmail/." /tmp/ange-ftp20665jvQ

Yes, that's my opinion, too.

He is. Exact the same size, seems to be full with the correct values.

Only the command
quote mdtm / and some others answer with
550 I can only retrieve regular files

But I don't know what this mean...

So it comes to debugging. Btw, which Emacs version do you use?

Do you see a chance to provide me an (anonymous) account on your FTP server?

Don't know. Without debugging, I'm at the end. Maybe you can try to
debug ange-ftp yourself? Otherwise, using another ftp server might be
an option.

decide to change the ftp server next time.

It is similar to ange-ftp, but it offers other methods for connection,
like ssh, or su (when you are on the same host).
