Must it be the `.emacs'-file?
It's certainly possible there.
Per chance I know an other way, but use a different system,
so with some reserve:
M-x customize-face, default
leads to a menu.
Changements however will be saved in some `.gnu-emacs-custom'
file probably.
As this file is read by default, it should work.
