Not a direct answer to your question but orgmode has spreadsheet
functionality and is in active development and help is generally
available.
For entering tabular data see tables http://orgmode.org/manual/Tables.html#Tables
And then the spreadsheet: http://orgmode.org/manual/The-spreadsheet.html#The-spreadsheet
