Is there any way to have org mode put a space between items?

I have this:

* thing
** subthing 1
** subthing 2
*** subsubthing
*otherthing

And I want this:

* thing

** subthing 1

** subthing 2

*** subsubthing

* otherthing

Just put a line space between the first two items manually. The
following items will inherit the spacing.

IIRCC if you put more than 1 blank line at the end of an item, it will
preserve that line when folded, and give you the spacing you want.

I do not know what the intention of the original question is, but I
found the use of background colors for the heading lines + customizing
org-fontify-whole-heading-lines to t to be very useful for a fast
visual overview.
