History is available in the *shell* buffer via M-p and M-n. The up and down arrows move point up and down, as usual, but you can change their default bindings like this: (add-hook 'shell-mode-hook (lambda () (local-set-key (kbd "") 'comint-previous-input) (local-set-key (kbd "") 'comint-next-input))) -- Kevin Rodgers
