You don't. Probably you want to "run-with-idle-timer".

        Why do you  need to know?  Perhaps would  running % time emacs
to time  the amount of CPU  time Emacs is using  or doing a %  ps ax |
grep emacs work?  (Caveat coder: *nix platform assumed)
