Well, you're using the default IMAP-SSL port, 993, for plain IMAP,
which by default uses port 143. Is that the problem?
This is to use an IMAP server as a spool file, right? If you want an
IMAP folder, you should set vm-imap-server-list instead of
vm-spool-files.
This is all documented in the VM manual.
