Subject: aspell, LaTeX, and german umlauts

I changed from ispell to aspell some time ago.

Now, when running aspell from within Emacs, the LaTeX "double-quote-
plus-character-transcription" is not recognized as umlaut anymore.
For example, aspell would not recognize

  K"uche

as

  Küche

but rather would try to check the "K" and the "uche" separately.

Same effect when starting aspell from the commandline.

I know about the possibility to encode non-ASCII characters in TeX/
LaTeX, but would not like to make use of it.

Is there any other option available but to revert to ispell?

Emacs is:

GNU Emacs 22.2.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars) of
2008-11-09 on raven, modified by Debian

GNU/Linux is:

Debian 5.0.3
