It turns out that the problem described below happens with so-called CVS
emacs. With
GNU Emacs 21.3.1 (i386-msvc-nt5.1.2600) of 2003-03-28 on buffy
this problem does not exist. So long with CVS emacs...

is quite old. Bugs in CVS Emacs come and go...
But yes - CVS Emacs (or "unstable" Emacs) may be a bit, erm,
unstable sometimes...
