Well, all sorts of keypresses can be detected under ms-windows, just as 
with Linux. So if anything is broken, it's the application, not the OS.

I'm too lazy to try this on my linuxbox.

ESC \ runs the command delete-horizontal-space
    which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `simple'.
(delete-horizontal-space &optional BACKWARD-ONLY)

Delete all spaces and tabs around point.
If BACKWARD-ONLY is non-nil, only delete spaces before point.
