I use (display-time) to show the time
in emacs. but does anyone know of a way
to not show the load average on the
mode-line.

The appearance is controlled by the variable
`display-time-string-forms'.

Something like:
(setq display-time-load-average-threshold 100)
in your .emacs is probably easiest.
