I installed 21.3 just now and found that the signature does not work. See
the output below.

How to fix. I'm running Emacs 21.3 on Windows XP. Thanks.

Please show us "the signature". I'm sure you have configured it
somehow -- the default is not to print a signature at all, AFAIK.

The ~/.signature is show below.

Cheers, Peter

Any problem with this signature? XEmacs 21.4.11 works perfectly with it
for months.

I mean, what did you do to configure the signature? Did you just edit
a file ~/.signature, or did you configure anything in Emacs or Gnus?

In fact, I put nothing related to .signature in .emacs file.

Very weird. Hm. Is there a beep or anything that might indicate an
error message?

What are the values of the variables message-signature and
message-signature-file? Use C-h v to find out.

Still not working well with the signature.

Last time it worked but it fails this time. I don't know what's happened.

Kai> What are the values of the variables message-signature and

message-signature's value is
(lambda nil
  (shell-command-to-string "$HOME/.signature"))

Documentation:
*String to be inserted at the end of the message buffer.
If t, the `message-signature-file' file will be inserted instead.
If a function, the result from the function will be used instead.
If a form, the result from the form will be used instead.

You can customize this variable.

Defined in `message'.

  Kai> message-signature-file? Use C-h v to find out.

message-signature-file's value is "~/.signature"

Documentation:
*Name of file containing the text inserted at end of message buffer.
Ignored if the named file doesn't exist.
If nil, don't insert a signature.

You can customize this variable.

Defined in `message'.

Uh, you know what "shell-command-to-string" does? This means that
the shell will run the command
$HOME/.signature
and the output of running this command (which needs to be an
executable, then) will then be the signature that gets inserted into
your message.

I somehow doubt that $HOME/.signature _is_ an executable command for
you.

That looks like a strange value. It tries to call $HOME/.signature as
a program and then uses the output of that program. I guess that
$HOME/.signature is not a program on your system.

How about this:

(setq message-signature nil
      message-signature-file "~/.signature")

This also happens to be the default.

Thanks. This cures the problem. :)
