now it works ... I don't know what changed ... !?!

works now in my ubuntu 12.04. aptitude install php-elisp installed the 
php plugin and that code in .emacs

(global-font-lock-mode 1)
(require 'php-mode)
(setq auto-mode-alist
   (append '(("\.php$" . php-mode)
             ("\.module$" . php-mode))
               auto-mode-alist))
