Aquamacs Emacs seems to cheat. *You* have to remember that ^ is a =20 dead-key, i.e. you have to press SPC afterwards. In an effort to =20 remind you of finishing your input that dead-key *seems* to be =20 inserted into the buffer where you started to type C-x ^, while the =20 cursor is taken into mini-buffer. Can you check what happens when you finish input?
