Dear all,

although I read a lot of literature like emacswiki, manuals, tips,
etc. I was not able to set up rmail in emacs.

I can start rmail but I always get the message "No new mail has
arrived" although there is new mail. It also seems that rmail actually
does not try to retrieve any mail because the "no mail"-message
appears so fast.

I would be very happy about a really no-brainer manual to set up rmail
or a .emacs file which I can more or less copy (if you post that file
please do not forget to remove passwords etc.)

My configuration is:
CarbonEmacs on Mac OS X
E-Mail account at www.web.de. -> (pop3, smtp)

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi,

Thank you very much in advance.

Where are your e-mails stored on your computer after having
fetched through pop3.

Hi Xavier,

I'm not sure how to answer to this question.

I have the impression that rmail does not fetch my E-Mails via pop3
(because of the almost immediate response time of rmail after trying
to retrieve mails) although responding that there are no mails.

As far as I understood everything, rmail retrieves the mails by itself
after selecting the retrieving program so my E-Mails are not stored
somewhere on my computer. They are still stored on the server of the E-
Mail provider.

I tried movemail and fetchmail in the customize group of rmail.

I think that my problem is that I have just absolutely no clue how to
configure rmail properly.

Thanks.

Hi,

I think that my problem is that I have just absolutely no clue how to
   configure rmail properly.

The question is very basic in fact. Depending on how you want to
fetch your mail, the setup is different.

You have the option to either give all power to rmail and thus it
will take in charge the fetching and displaying of your mail.
This method needs some configuration to inform rmail where and
how to retrieve your mails. You have to be sure that movemail has
been compiled with --with-pop option.

Or you can use external third party tools such as
fetchmail/procmail to fetch your mail from your pop3 server.
Advantage of this method is that you simply configure fetchmail
once and you have nothing to do in rmail. M-x rmail RET will
automaticall retrieve your message from your local spool.

Please, consider reading GNU Emacs manual[1] or check Rmail info
page[2].

Also consider "getmail" over "fetchmail".

   Also consider "getmail" over "fetchmail".

What are the advantages of getmail over fetchmail ?

Please also respect mail standards like the Mail-Followup-To header if
your mailer does not.

FWIW, a lot of people (including me) are reading these posts
through USEnet, so Mail-Followup-To doesn't really cut it.
Perhaps setting *both* Mail-Followup-To and Followup-To will
work, but I haven't tried it.

Me too. That's why I set Mail-Copies-To.

AFAIU Followup-To is for restricting the set of newsgroups. It is
unrelated to email.

I don't think it's the right list for this discussion. Briefly,
getmail seems to be user-friendlier and more reliable (esp over slow
connections). Please, see getmail faqs for details.

MFT are not standards AFAIK. Aren't they ?

MFT is not part of an RFC, if you mean that, but many mailers support
the header.

Anyway, since you now intentionally chose to ignore my request not to
include me in the list of recipients of your replies to the list, I will
have to resort to not answering future messages of yours.

MFT is not part of an RFC, if you mean that, but many mailers support
   the header.

This is exactly what I meant.

Anyway, since you now intentionally chose to ignore my request not to
include me in the list of recipients of your replies to the list, I will
have to resort to not answering future messages of yours.

First, this is not intentional at all. I send several tens of
mails a day and I have no time to check that I am actually doing
things on a per-user-taste-basis. So please, setup some sort of
filters to process mails incoming from me to trash. Also note
that I am reading/writing (on)to mailing list as several other
people do, that is to say, I am certainly not the unique guy
answering that way[1]
