hello,

I use emacs to edit Python code, and I hate lines longer than 80
characters. I'd like to write a minor mode that draws a vertical line or
darkens the character at the 80th spot, but I'm confused about how to do
that. Should I use a bunch of overlays? Is there some better way? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Sean

Isn't better just to use:

,----[ C-h f auto-fill-mode RET ]
| auto-fill-mode is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `simple'.
| (auto-fill-mode &optional ARG)
|
| Toggle Auto Fill mode.
| With arg, turn Auto Fill mode on if and only if arg is positive.
| In Auto Fill mode, inserting a space at a column beyond
| `current-fill-column'
| automatically breaks the line at a previous space.
|
| The value of `normal-auto-fill-function'specifies the function to use
| for àuto-fill-function'when turning Auto Fill mode on.

   ,----[ C-h f auto-fill-mode RET ]

That isn't a mode I'd prefer to use for writing code. I think
highlight-beyond-fill-column.el from the Emacs Lisp List is more
like what the OP had in mind. YMMV (I couldn't get it to work.)
Look around the net for other things that do the same thing. For
help with writing minor modes, read the elisp manual.
