It seems to me that if my circa 2004 code (first reply) was appealing enough to enough people, it might have been included in Emacs (I did sign papers to become a contributor). But that doesn't seem to have been the case, and I don't even use the code myself anymore (though maybe I'll start again after this discussion to see if it improves my life). Anyway, it seems likely that if someone can identify the scratch buffer as a problem, they can also figure out how to solve the problem.
